KATZ PLUM PRESERVES - Laroda Variety 16 oz. $17
"For my money, KATZ makes the best jams in the country." Corby Kummer, The Atlantic
The Story: We use several varieties of plums during the summer season depending on the timing each one becomes available. At present, the Santa Rosa variety is sold out so we now are offering the next in line the Laroda Plum variety for these popular preserves.
The Fruit: It was developed and first planted in Winters, CA in the early 1940s. Like the Santa Rosa plums, these also come from Frank and Michelle Bera at Bera Ranch in Winters. They have been growing heirloom stone fruit for over 25 years and are committed to keeping them going. The Laroda has dark purple skin with a red/orange flesh; here are some of our tasting notes when we sat down to marvel at the flavor:
The Taste: The finished condiment is a deep cherry red, with balanced flavors full of sweet spice and a pleasant but forward tart finish. The natural pectin in the fruit leaves a nice, firm texture with a distinctive “pluminess” that hints of black cherries!
Serving Suggestions: Try them on warm scones or biscuits, or on an English muffin with cream cheese. Also makes a delectable condiment for your fall holiday glazed ham, roasted turkey or pork loin. Or, make the absolutely best sandwich with our homemade Roasted Almond Butter and a slathering of KATZ Laroda Plum Preserves (we call that an AB&J around here).
