CARTER AND CO CERAMIC PLATE - Napa Valley
We had the good fortune to have met ceramicist Richard Carter over 25 years ago when his studio was on the Napa River not far from the KATZ Kitchen. He truly is a local treasure yet nationally recognized for his art in clay. He is a natural teacher and mentor and as he said, "I taught adults and children, winemakers, everybody,” (including teaching our daughter, Lily, who took ceramics classes from Richard as a child!).
He believes in the beauty of material and the intelligence in things. The pleasures of eating that come when you’re conscious of the lives and the world from which the food comes...a true expression of form and function!
In Richard’s own words about his work and artistic philosophy:
The table is a perfect snapshot of life on the homestead, where friends who gather to share food and ideas are foremost banded in creative pursuits. Art is a worthy calling and it has always rewarded me for being me.
As many of us feel, people are tired of meaningless, fake stuff from China – things without stories. People want a story and they want to meet the makers.
All the ceramics are fired in hand-built kilns on his historic ranch in the hills above Napa Valley. The clay is formulated to echo the variegated granite stone of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. When fired, the custom mix expresses variation in response to the flame of each individual kiln firing. The clay is durable with a depth and character that gives individuality to each piece but remains consistent with the tonal range of the entire line. The glaze is a custom smokey, waxy white-gray hue with a lustrous matte finish. The smooth surface serves as a tactile counterpoint to the unglazed, textured clay base.
